Student Reading Charter eRead Charter

As 2024 os the Dragon Year, EdCity has launched a special edition of Reading Charter Cards. Dragons occupies a critical position in Chinese culture. They are not only an auspicious animal, but also the totem of the Chinese nation.

Starting from February 5, 2024, schools may order the physical version of the Dragon Card by filling out the online form, and students can also apply for e-cards on designated website and the EdBookShelf App, and have a chance to draw the electronic version of the Dragon Card!

Objectives

'Student Reading Charter' under Reading Charter encourages them to embark on the journey of reading. Students can record their reading progress systematically while enjoying the contentment brought by books, developing stable reading habits in the long run.  Teachers can understand students' reading habits and capabilities with online reports.

A series of new Reading Charter Cards will be introduced to further arouse students’ interests in reading. Details of ordering Reading Charter Cards will be announced on this page later.

'Student Reading Charter' is in 3 phases:

  • Phase 1: 9 October 2023 - 31 January 2024  
  • Phase 2: 1 February 2024 - 31 May 2024
  • Phase 3: 1 June 2024 - 18 August 2024

Details

  • There are two set of Reading Charter cards for Primary School Division and Secondary School Division respectively. Each set consists of 4 cards
  • Students can obtain a Reading Charter Card after finishing reading one book and writing their thoughts on it
  • Each Reading Charter card can be linked to one reading record. The more books students finish reading, the more cards they could collect. Students may also have chances to get prizes
  • Schools can purchase Reading Charter Cards through the online order form, or apply for free e Reading Charter Cards
  • Hong Kong Education City have the final decision on the rules, terms and results of Reading Charter

On the back of each Reading Charter card, there are pledges on reading to encourage students to set up reading goals while enjoying the pleasure of reading:

eRead Charter

Objectives

‘eRead Charter’ under Reading Charter helps schools implement school-based eBook reading programmes so as to cultivate reading culture at school and facilitate students' self-directed reading.

All ‘eRead Scheme’ participating schools which have subscribed to any of the following reading packages:

Details

  • Schools need to subscribe to any reading package of ‘eRead Scheme’
  • Students need to log in with their EdCity student account to read eBooks. The system will record the reading data automatically (Note: The reading data will not be recorded when reading in the offline mode with tablets or smartphones)
  • Teacher reports with student progress are available on the website
  • Teachers can use the website’s ‘Distribution’ function and visit 'Hong Kong Reading City' Website to distribute and recommend eBooks to students and compete for the ‘Top School Award in Promoting Reading’ and ‘Outstanding Educator Award in Promoting
  •  Hong Kong Education City has the final decision on the rules, terms and results of the Scheme.

Terms and Conditions

Students need to log in with their EdCity student accounts in ‘My Books’in Reading City or EdBookShelf App (Note 2), and submit their reading records with book information and thoughts on the finished books when unlocking Reading Charter cards

  • Student can submit their thoughts on books in the format of texts or illustrations, which must be original
  • Reviews on books that contain inappropriate content will be deleted without further notice
  • Plagiarism, which includes the use or copying another person's work, will result in disqualification
  • One Reading Charter card can only be linked to one finished book. A Reading Charter card can be activated once only
  • Teacher reports with student progress are available on the website

 

Note 2: In view of the newly launched Reading Charter cards, there will be updates on both Reading City website and EdBookShelf App. Please stay tuned.

Schools and students with excellent performances will be rewarded. Teachers can register online with their EdCity teacher accounts by 18 August 2024(Sun)​. Schools that have entered the Scheme are entitled to win school prizes.

Student Awards

1. Reading Badge

For each phase, the students having collected certain number of Reading Charter cards will receive electronic badges, certificates and souvenirs (unlimited quota):

Primary School Division Secondary School Division
  • Gold Reading Badge: collection of at least 15 Reading Charter cards
  • Silver Reading Badge: collection of at least 10 Reading Charter cards
  • Bronze Reading Badge: collection of at least 5 Reading Charter cards
  • Gold Reading Badge: collection of at least 12 Reading Charter cards
  • Silver Reading Badge: collection of at least 8 Reading Charter cards
  • Bronze Reading Badge: collection of at least 4 Reading Charter cards

2. Joyful Reading Family Award

To motivate parents to encourage their children to develop a stable reading habit, this award is established to reward students with the most reading records:

  • Number of awardees: 3 students for each division
  • Eligibility: Top 15 students from each division who collect most Reading Charter cards
  • Selection: Eligible students, along with their family members, will be invited to EdCity and share their joy and thoughts on Reading
  • Prizes: Certificates, souvenirs, one admission ticket of Ocean Park for each awardee

School Awards

'Best Participation Awards for Schools' (5 schools for each division)

For the whole year (Phase 1 + 2 + 3), the 5 schools with the highest participating rates will receive 'Best Participation Awards for Schools'. 

  • Eligibility: schools with highest rates of students who activate a Reading Charter card over the whole school year
  • Prizes: medals, awarded books from Top Ten Book Picks

2023/24 Result Announcement

Students who were awarded Reading Badge in phase 1 of 2024/24 school year may download electronic certificates: 2023/24

The 2023/24 electronic certificates will cease to be available after September 2025. If you wish to keep the electronic certificates, please download them before the deadline.

Awarded schools and schools with awarded students will receive a separate notification through email.

eRead Charter

School Awards

Reading date is from 9 October 2023 – 23 August 2024.

For the whole year, the 10 schools with the highest student participation rates (i.e. number of participating students / total number of students within the same school) are eligible to compete for the following awards:

  • ‘Top School Award in Promoting Reading’ (One school for each division)
    Schools with highest average numbers of eBooks recommended and distributed by teachers among the list of participating schools.

Awarded schools will receive a certificate and 10 award-winning books of the ‘Top Ten Book Picks’ (Top 5 books most loved by students and recommended by teachers respectively).

  • ‘Outstanding Educator Award in Promoting Reading’ (Five teachers per division)

Teachers with highest numbers of recommended and distributed eBooks by teachers among the list of participating schools.

Awarded teachers will receive certificates and the Special Exhibition tickets (Gallery 1 to Gallery 9) of Hong Kong Palace Museum Exhibitions. Each winner teacher will receive two adult tickets.

  • 'Best Participation Awards for Schools’ (Five schools for each division)

Schools with the highest student participation rates

Awarded schools will receive certificates and $1000 book vouchers.

Also, a downloadable eCertificate template is available for teachers to encourage students with active participation.
