Enhancing ethnic minority children’s Chinese Proficiency for a better start

“C-for-Chinese@JC” is a Trust-Initiated Project created and funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, and co-created by three local universities and two non-governmental organisations. The Project has adopted a “home-school-community” collaborative and evidence-based model, which fosters a culturally responsive and pleasurable learning environment and facilitates effective teaching. Through enhancing the Chinese proficiency of ethnic minority kindergarten students, the Project aims to give them a better start in terms of better transition to primary education and a greater sense of belonging.

 

Project feature: Cultivating a culturally responsive learning and teaching environment

18 sets of culturally responsive storybooks with ethnic minority cultural contents, and relevant teaching and learning resources

Nurturing ethnic minority youth as Multicultural Teaching Assistants

Training programme recognized by the Education Bureau

Emphasize cultural diversity and leverage on the funds of knowledge

 

All-rounded support services anchoring “home-school-community” collaboration

 

 

Project Achievements

  

Teachers have enhanced knowledge of pedagogy and practices for teaching ethnic minority students

Ethnic minority students have improved Chinese language score

EM parents are more confident in supporting children’s learning and primary transition
