Fireflies communicate with light. They use light to attract mates and defend territory. The males fly, while females wait to spot an attractive male and signal him with a flash.

The light bulbs we use emit light as well as heat. But the lights that fireflies produce are “cold lights”, which are the most efficient lights in the world because they produce no heat at all!

Fireflies appear on all continents except Antarctica. They have a short lifespan of around one year. Urban light pollution is killing fireflies; don’t forget to turn off the outdoor lights when you don’t need them!
