About the Author

Nicolas Bentley is a popular writer of entertaining stories. However, his The Case of the Sharp-Eyed Jeweller is a detective story with a difference.

Conan Doyle (1859 - 1930) is among the greatest writers of detective stories. He was born in a rich family and he was a doctor in his earlier years. In 1876, Conan met Dr Joseph Bell, the person who inspired the character of Sherlock Holmes.

Dorothy Sayers (1893 - 1957), translator, dramatist and poet, is one of the best women-writers of detective stories. Most of these concern the detective of her invention, Peter Wimsey. The best of them are Murder Must Advertise and The Nine Tailors. The short story The Case of the Missing Clock is in humorous vein and has an ending which cannot fail to surprise the reader.

Austin Freeman (1862 - 1943) is the inventor of the well-known Dr Thorndyke, a detective of a modern kind who uses his knowledge of Science and Medicine in his successful search for criminals. The Case of the Camden Killer shows Thorndyke at work, and Freeman at his best.

Edgar Allan Poe (1809 - 1849), American writer and poet, is best known for his short stories, most of which are concerned with horror, violence, murder or the supernatural. His detective story, The Murders in the Rue Morgue is among the earliest and best ever written and it has been a model for writers of detective stories ever since.
