‘I like football.’

Hong Kong people associate ‘football’ with affiliation football, while the Americans refer it to rugby football because they call affiliation football ‘soccer’. Even though the word ‘soccer’ is mainly used in the United States, it is surprising that this word is invented by the British people. In late 80s, the British began calling affiliation football ‘assoc’ or ‘socca’ in order to differentiate these two sports. Use of the abbreviation lasted till 1980s and has been adopted by the American people ever since. Thus, ‘football’ only refers to Rugby in the US nowadays.

When you visit the US or talk to an American next time, bear in mind that ‘soccer’ is football, while ‘football’ is Rugby.
