'You look sad, Monster. Why?' Robin asked Monster in the kitchen.'I have made a mistake in the cooking.' said Monster sadly'Don't worry. I am sure Uncle Ben will understand.' Robin tried to cheer Monster up.'Right, as you are still learning the ropes.' Alice agreed.'I learn to cook, not the ropes!' Monster was confused.'Learning the ropes means learning new things.' Alice explained. 'I see.' Monster finally smiled again.

To learn the ropes is an expression meaning to learn how to do something, especially something new. This expression comes from sailing. When sailors first started working on a boat, they had to learn which ropes were attached to which sails. Eventually this expression is used in daily conversations meaning to learn new things.
