Story and comic created by CCFamily.

Coral is a sea animal that has a calcium carbonate skeleton that looks similar to a rock. Live, healthy coral is often brightly coloured. A group of solidified coral at or near an ocean surface is called coral reefs.

Coral reefs are one of the most diverse ecosystems on earth. They are the rainforests of the oceans. They occupy less than 1% of the world’s ocean surface, about half the area of France, yet they provide a home for 25% of all marine species.

More than 4,000 species of fish, and other organisms such as sponges, jellyfish, and turtles, rely on the coral reefs.
