Glooskap and the Seasons

This is a Native American myth about how the different seasons were created.

  • 1 Long ago, it grew very cold.
  • 2Ice and snow covered the land.
  • 3Corn could not grow.
  • 4Glooskap, the leader of the people, had to do something.
  • 5Glooskap went far to the north.
  • 6Everything was white with snow.
  • 7He came to a house made of ice.
  • 8A giant named Winter lived there.
  • 9Winter invited Glooskap inside.
  • 10Winter began to tell stories.
  • 11Glooskap fell asleep under Winter's spell.
  • 12But Glooskap's bird woke him up.
  • 13"Go south, Glooskap"...
  • 14...said bird.
  • 15You will find a woman who can help you.
  • 16Glooskap went to the south.
  • 17He came to a land where it was warm and sunny.
  • 18Grass grew and flowers bloomed.
  • 19Glooskap saw Summer dancing in the field.
  • 20She had a crown of flowers in her hair.
  • 21Glooskap asked Summer to come north.
  • 22She came with him to Winter's house of ice.
  • 23Winter invited them in.
  • 24He began to tell stories again.
  • 25But Winter's spells did not work on Summer.
  • 26She began to sing her own spell.
  • 27Winter's house of ice began to melt.
  • 28"I am stronger than you."
  • 29...said Summer.
  • 30"You must leave this land"...
  • 31...she said.
  • 32Old Winter cried.
  • 33His tears became rivers of melted snow.
  • 34The corn grew.
  • 35The flowers bloomed again.
  • 36Summer spoke to Winter.
  • 37You will live in the north.
  • 38You may visit the other lands.
  • 39But in the spring, I will make you leave.
  • 40Since that day Winter rules for part of the year.
  • 41But every spring Summer drives him away.
  • 42Sometimes it seems like winter will never end.
  • 43But spring will always come.
