What is Culture?
Last Modified: 10/04/2017
Having culture is important because it defines the city and its people.
- 1When I ask people in Hamilton, "What is culture?"
- 2I get a lot of different answers.
- 3But what is it really?
- 4What is its value?
- 5And why does it matter?
- 6So, where to start?
- 7I live in this city.
- 8It has roads, clean water, electricity, police stations, hospitals, schools,...
- 9...but every city has these.
- 10What makes Hamilton different?
- 11Well, this could be where culture comes in.
- 12Let's see: festivals and events, a thriving art scene,...
- 13...stories and customs, a sense of history,...
- 14...cool architecture, creative talent, public art,...
- 15...and even outdoor places like parks, farms and waterfalls.
- 16These are all considered to be part of culture.
- 17All of these things create activity and buzz,...
- 18...a positive energy known as cultural vibrancy.
- 19And this vibrancy helps to build community,..
- 20...define neighborhoods,...
- 21...and make the place we live in have a unique identity.
- 22It also leads to attachment.
- 23People that are attached to Hamilton want to live here.
- 24They get involved, and they talk about it.
- 25As the word spreads, people come, and businesses too.
- 26This attracts more people and then more businesses.
- 27Creative talent is drawn to Hamilton,...
- 28...and is already one-third of the labor force and growing.
- 29I guess you could say that culture is all the things...
- 30...that make life in a place meaningful and interesting.
- 31It's valuable because it can promote identity, creativity, tourism, jobs, and growth,...
- 32...and it matters because it contributes to quality of life,...
- 33...creating attraction and attachment,...
- 34...revitalizing neighborhoods, transforming cities,...
- 35...and making communities attractive, open, welcoming, and vibrant.
- 36So, if you take away culture, then what do we have left?
- 37Get culture.
- 38Love your city.
