  • 1There once lived a very large whale.
  • 2This whale was always very hungry.
  • 3He liked eating fish.
  • 4He ate, and ate, and ate until there was only one fish left in the sea.
  • 5This fish was very clever.
  • 6He hid behind the whale's ear and said in a soft voice, "Have you ever eaten a man?"
  • 7"No, I haven't," the whale answered.
  • 8"You should try one," the fish suggested. "I'm sure you'll enjoy it."
  • 9"Where can I find a man?" the whale asked.
  • 10"There's one sitting alone on a boat," the fish answered.
  • 11"He's a sailor. His ship sank and he lives on an island."
  • 12"Follow me, I'll take you to it."
  • 13The fish swam away and the whale followed it.
  • 14Soon, they came to an island.
  • 15"Can you see the man?" the fish asked. "He's sitting in his boat."
  • 16"Yes, I can see him," the whale said.
  • 17As quickly as he could, the whale swam toward the man in his boat.
  • 18He opened his big mouth, and swallowed the man, and his boat.
  • 19When the man found himself inside the whale, he was very angry.
  • 20He jumped up, and down, and shouted for the whale to let him go.
  • 21He ran around, and around inside the whale. He was very upset.
  • 22All these movements made the whale hiccup.
  • 23The small fish saw all of this.
  • 24He said to the whale, "Go ahead and let the man out."
  • 25The whale agreed and shouted to the sailor, "Come out! You are making me uncomfortable!"
  • 26"I will come out," said the sailor, "but you have to take me back home to my island."
  • 27"Agreed," answered the whale. "I will take you home now."
  • 28The whale got to the island very quickly.
  • 29He opened his mouth to let the sailor out.
  • 30The sailor didn't want the whale to eat people anymore.
  • 31As he was about to run out of the whale,...
  • 32...the sailor made holes in his boat to make a grate.
  • 33The grate got stuck in the whale's throat.
  • 34He left his boat and ran out of the whale's mouth.
  • 35The whale now had the grate stuck in his throat.
  • 36He tried everything to get it out, but he could not.
  • 37From then on, he could not swallow anything large.
  • 38This is why whales never eat people, not even small boys and girls.
  • 39They can eat only very small fish
