In January 2017, the Environment Bureau of the Hong Kong SAR Government released the Hong Kong’s Climate Action Plan 2030+ report, in response to increasingly severe consequences of climate change by setting up targets for reducing carbon emissions. One way to achieve the target is to minimize different types of waste. A significant portion of waste, which goes to landfill, belongs to household waste (such as food, construction, paper, and plastic). Thus, reducing the amount of household waste is crucial to the environmental sustainability of Hong Kong.

To address sustainability as an important issue, Hong Kong Education City (HKEdCity) and HKUST-Lee Kum Kee Happy Family Learning Center are jointly organizing the ‘Code2App’ program for primary and secondary school students. Students can make use of their coding and computational thinking skills, along with their creativity to build Android apps, to arouse the public awareness of reducing household waste.

A. Objectives

  1. To empower teachers and students to utilize computational thinking and code using App Inventor
  2. To stimulate students’ creativity and apply computational thinking to design an Android app expressing the theme
  3. To enhance students’ awareness of sustainability
  4. To promote harmonious family relationships by collaboratively solving a problem


B. Learning Journey

The scheme is a learning journey consists of three major components: 'Learning', 'Contest' and 'Extension'.

Part 1 – Learning

  • An online course on App Inventor and workshops are offered for participants to learn coding and computation thinking.
  • Online Course: The course include training on computational thinking and how to use MIT App Inventor, where participants can get to know the design principles behind applications coding. Teachers are also welcomed to register and make use of the online course materials for school lessons.

  • Workshops: Teachers and students can participate workshops with hands-on experience in developing interesting Android applications.


Part 2 – Contest

  • Participants can choose to enter the Application Development Contest of next stage, which they will create an Android app about household waste reduction with the knowledge they have learnt in the course and workshops.
  • There is no limit on the number of participating teams for each school, and each team should consist of 2-4 students.
  • Students will apply their App inventor skills to build Android apps that can promote the awareness of household wastes to family members or encourage the reduction of household wastes in a family.


Part 3 – Extend

  • Shortlisted finalists will present their ideas and works in front of the judging panel in 18 May (Saturday).
  • Besides competing for the champions, finalists can also join the free STEM courses and activities in HKUST during summer holidays, so that they can further their journey to become a coding expert.

Rules & Regulations

  1. There is no limit on the number of participating teams for each school, and each team should consist of 2-4 students.
  2. Participating teams need to build Android apps that can promote the awareness of household wastes to family members or encourage the reduction of household wastes in a family. For example, the app can be
    1. A collection of useful information related to waste reduction (such as the locations of recycle stations) or
    2. A tool that can keep track of the amount of wastes produced or
    3. A social app that can rate the environmental friendliness of daily life activities
  3. Each team needs to submit:
    1. Introductory Video (3 minutes maximum, demonstrating how the app arouses the public awareness of household waste as a sustainability issue)
    2. Introductory PowerPoint file (within 10 slides, including the ideas of the submission, technical aspect of the app, etc)
    3. App Inventor project file (AIA file)
  4. Finalists will be shortlisted, and the team members will give a 5-minute presentation which will be followed by a 5-minute question-and-answer session in front of the judging panel on 18 May (Sat).
  5. Each team can only submit one entry.
  6. All entries must be original and not be published in other occasions before. By submitting an entry the participant affirms that the entry neither contains any third party copyrighted materials nor infringes any intellectual property rights of any third parties.
  7. Submission of any entry indicates that the participant has read and accepted the Rules & Regulations of the competition.
  8. The Organisers reserve the right to exhibit the participants’ ideas/ Apps.
  9. Copyrights of the ideas/ Apps are retained by the participants themselves.
  10. The Organisers reserve the right to amend, extend and interpret the competition guideline and rules without prior notice.
  11. A certificate will be issued to students who have completed the student training workshops.
  12. In case of any dispute, the Organisers reserve the right of final decision.

  • Secondary Division: the finalists can take a free credit-bearing course in HKUST during the summer holiday
  • Primary Division: the finalists can join a free STEM workshop in HKUST during the summer holiday
