Overview: How to decide on which schools to apply?

Once you have given careful and thorough consideration to all of your academic, social, geographic and financial options, you should begin to narrow your choices down to seven to ten schools. You should break down your choices into 3 categories:

a. Safety Schools

Choose two to three schools where your profile is significantly stronger than the typical freshmen and you would have approximately a 60 - 90 percent chance of getting in.

b. Target Schools

Choose four to five schools where your profile is similar to the average applicant. You would have approximately a 30 - 60 percent chance of getting in. Chances are you will end up going to one of these schools.

c. Reach Schools

Choose two to three schools that are highly selective where acceptance rate is less than 30 percent. These schools should be your top choices and you may want to consider applying early decision or early action.
