Overview: What are the different degrees and programs available?

US universities and colleges offer a wide variety of courses. Most bachelor's degree programs are highly flexible and you can often create your own unique program of study. Most degrees are completed in four years with a few exceptions (architecture, ….).

Most undergraduate curriculums require students to complete a set of general education classes such as history, English, philosophy, math, natural science and social science. These classes are usually taken in the first two years of college. Some of you may wonder about the relevance of these courses especially if you have already decided to major in engineering or computer science. A lot of us (non-liberal arts majors) also had the same thoughts when we were in your shoes. However, most of us now agree that these classes have given us a much more complete college experience and have made us to become more well-rounded and knowledgeable people.

Although some of you may already have a strong opinion on what to major in, it is important to take this opportunity to identify your strengths and weaknesses and more importantly, to think about what you really enjoy doing. The US College Board website has a section called "MyRoad", a personalized and comprehensive guidance solution that helps you explore and research college majors, colleges, and careers. We strongly recommend you to take advantage of this website to learn more about yourself and the options available to you.
