It is 1775 in France when Lucie Manette reunites with her father, who has been kept in prison for 18 years. She then meets and marries a Frenchman, Charles Darnay. About the Author

Charles Dickens (1812-1870) is the best-known English writer of the 19th century. His parents were poor and his early years were hard. Before working professionally as a novelist, he had worked as a reporter in London. As a reporter, he had a chance to understand how the poor lived. He pitied their sufferings and campaigned against the injustice the poor faced. This can be reflected in some of his novels.

Dickens' famous works include Oliver Twist (1838), David Copperfield (1849), A Tale of Two Cities (1859) and Great Expectations (1860-1861).
