About the Series
"Martine" is a long lasting illustrated books for children whose first title "Martine in the farm" (Martine à la ferme) was published in 1954. Presently, the series has totally 54 titles which have been developed into different kinds of editions, books of activities, toys, diaries, licensing products etc. 80 millions albums were sold in the world. We can find this series in different versions in "more than 35 countries". |
Writer: Gilbert Delahaye
Born in 1923, Gilbert Delahaye studied in Tournai, a city of Belgium. In 1944, he joined the publisher Casterman as a typographer. As a famous poet (he won the prize of Prévert in 1985), he was asked by the publishing house to write a story on a little girl whose adventures could form a series of albums. Therefore in 1953 Martine was born in collaboration with the illustrator Marcel Marlier. "Martine à la ferme" ("Martine in the farm") and "Martine en voyage" ("Martine goes travelling") published in 1954. Before he passed away in 1997, Gilbert Delahaye wrote a new story about the heroine Martine every year.

He was born in Herseaux in Belgium, a city close to the frontier with France on 18 th November. At 16 year-old, he entered the school of decorative arts of Saint Luc College located in Tournai. In 1951, he finished his study with a distinguished result. Since 1953, he returned to Saint Luc College as a professor. When he was a student, he won the competition of drawing organized by the publisher La Procure in Namur. Soon after, he was engaged in some pedagogical books which included "Je lis avec Michel et Nicole" ("I read with Michel and Nicole") and "Je calcule avec Michel et Nicole" (I calculate with Michel and Nicole") . His collaboration with La Procure lasted for 25 years. Since 1951, he joined Casterman.
He then became the illustrator for several classic books written by novelists such as Alexandre Dumas, la comtesse Ségur and Madame le Prince de Beaumont. In the mean time, he also participated in the children's series Farandole. In 1954, he began to collaborate with Gilbert Delahaye for the adventures of Martine (since then 54 albums have been published, more than 50 millions of books in French version have been sold in the world). In 1969, he started a new children's series of 12 albums for Casterman named "Jean – Lou et Sophie" ("Jean – Lou and Sophie").

Mary Shovelin, born in Donegal, Ireland, in 1960, graduated from University College Dublin in 1980 with a degree in French and Spanish. After working in Spain for a year, she moved to Brussels, Belgium, where she worked as a translator for various European organisations. She has been working freelance since 1989, focusing mainly on European Union texts, legal texts, art and literature. She lives in Brussels with her husband and two children. |
