  To appreciate achievements of global outstanding chemists and contribution of Chemistry to mankind so far, United Nations has long been decided to initiate world-wide celebration schemes for sake of increase the public appreciation of chemistry in meeting world needs and nurture interest of young people in chemistry. Riding on the year 2011 is 100th Anniversary of Marie Curie’s receiving the Nobel Prize in Chemistry and foundation of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), the IUPAC proclaimed 2011 to be the IYC in August 2007and agreed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) shortly and ultimately led to the declaration by United Nations General Assembly in December 2008 that 2011 be the IYC with the theme “Chemistry – Our Life Our Future”.
 As a cosmopolitan city with outstanding academic and research achievements, Hong Kong had recently formed its IYC for sake of fulfilling the determined purposes via initiating series of celebration events. In fact, to align with the IYC and by taking advantage of reputation and strength in online dissemination, Hong Kong Education City Limited (HKedCity) had recently established a dedicated website for teachers, students, parents as well as public participation in Hong Kong, aiming at:-
- Keep all target groups informed about the latest news of local and global happenings of IYC;
- Make recommendation and list out of all programmes to be taken place in Hong Kong all along 2011;
- Facilitate online exchange of idea and information via forum and comment boxes; and
- Link to high quality resources and acknowledgement of websites in relevance.
Committee has so far initiated more than 6 mega scale events like the IYC 2011 HK Opening Ceremony and Reception, the 16th Hong Kong Chemistry Olympiad for Secondary Schools (2010/2011), Chinese University Hong Kong Chemistry Talks, the 14th Primary Science Project Exhibition while more are waiting to come including the ongoing IYC 2011(HK) Online video Competition and Laboratory for High School Students to be held by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in July.
On 16th April 2011, the Hong Kong Baptist University took the lead in organizing a campus open day themed “Chemistry Fun Fun Fun 2011” catering personnel in all disciplines. Activities on the event day were cool and awesome, including an Opening Ceremony, Chemistry Talk Highlight, interesting Laboratory Demonstrations, Chemistry booth series and Chemistry Magic Show. As one of the IYC 2011 (HK) Committee, the HKedCity also took part in the event day with shooting* and together with photos and referencing material in relevance, all are disseminated in this feature for reference by all. It is hoped that via joining hand in hand among all in Hong Kong and other countries as well, the coming IYC celebration would turn to be a precedent great success!!
