| Q.1 | How come do we have the International Year of Chemistry (IYC)? When will it start? |

The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) and United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)believe that it is time to celebrate the achievements of Chemistry and its contributions to the well-being of humankind. In August 2007, the former proclaimed 2011 to be the IYC and agreed by the latter shortly and it led to the declaration by United Nations General Assembly in December 2008 that 2011 be the IYC. As 2011 is on board, celebrations all around the world are possible provided those are endorsed by the Management Committee under the UNESCO. |
| Q.2 | What are the goals of it? |

Whatever celebration programmes are targeted for IYC, it should fulfill one or more of the following:- Increase the public appreciation of chemistry in meeting world needs; Increase interest of young people in chemistry; Generate enthusiasm for the creative future of chemistry; and Celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Mme. Curie Nobel Prize and the 100th anniversary of the founding of the International Association of Chemical Societies. |

The theme of IYC is “Chemistry – Our Life Our Future”. |
| Q.4 | What’s the scale of the IYC celebration? |

The IYC celebration will be a year long and global one till the end of 2011. |
| Q.5 | What kind of initiatives do we have at regional HK for celebration? |
|
A Committee of International Year of Chemistry-Hong Kong has recently been established, which oversees the whole implementation of IYC celebration at regional HK. There would be an array of programmes including Chemistry Days at University campus, Chemistry magic show, Sales of souvenirs, core Campaigns like the 16th Hong Kong Chemistry Olympaid for Secondary Schools, e-competitions such as Chemistry video creation and essay writing revolving around the Chemistry discipline, etc. Please click at ‘ Celebration Initiatives ’ Section for details. |
