Question 318 - Footwear (wellington boots and galoshes)

Dear Graham,

Could I know the difference between "galoshes" and "wellington boots"? I have searched for the photos of these two kinds of foot wear on the Internet but they just came out to be the same!

From
Matthew

Dear Matthew

Galoshes are waterproof shoes worn over your normal shoes when it is raining. They act as a cover. They are also called overshoes in the UK. I don¡¦t know where you could buy galoshes in Hong Kong. They are quite uncommon.

Wellington boots (or wellingtons) are waterproof boots which usually come up to your knees.
I have seen quite a lot of women wearing colourful wellington boots in rainy weather recently.
They are often called ¡¥wellies¡¦ for short. Americans call them rubber boots.

I also searched on Google and found galoshes which looked like wellington boots. Either those websites are wrong or the meaning of galoshes is changing.

You can see pictures of other types of footwear types of footwear. There is a lot of clothing vocabulary there.

Best wishes
Graham
