Question 303 - Difference between .evaluation・ and .assessment・
Dear Graham

Would you let me know the difference between "Evaluation" and "Assessment"?

Thanks a lot.

From,
Fong
Dear Fong

I・m guessing that you are talking about school. Both words are related to grading students for their work.

Assessment is done from students・ work. Students produce work and teachers give them a grade.

e.g. I will give the students a grammar assessment next week. I hope they revise!

Evaluation can be based on what the teacher thinks of a student. Maybe there is no work to look at. It is just the teacher・s feeling.

e.g. The NET teacher gives every student an evaluation of their oral English at the end of term. She told them how to improve.

Words ending in .tion・ and .ment・ are usually nouns. The verb forms are .assess・ and .evaluate・.

Best wishes
Graham
