Question 289 - A letter to say you are leaving a school
Dear Mr Young,

If I need to drop out from a school in order to study in another school, how shall I write the letter to the first school? What is this letter formally called? What is its format?

Could you give me some help?

Regards,

Anita
Dear Anita

Your letter could be called a termination letter, since you are terminating (stopping) your place in the school. The rules for this are the same as a resignation letter for leaving a job. Be short and thankful. You do not need to explain why you are leaving.

Here is an example. I・m pretending that you are a Wong Mei Ling going to Form Six.

Dear Principal

I am afraid that I will not be taking the Form Six place offered to me. I am grateful that your school gave me this opportunity and apologise for causing any inconvenience.

Yours Faithfully
Wong Mei Ling

You can read about other types of formal letters here. This site explains how to write formal letters.
