Question 283 - Two common questions
Dear Mr Young,

'I would like to ask you ...'

If you want to know what I want to ask, you would say, 'What would you like to ask?'

But if you want to know why I want to ask, would you say, 'Why would you like to ask?' or 'Why do you want to ask?' which I think is more natural?

Regards,

K Cheung (Mrs)
Dear Mrs Cheung
To encourage people to ask me a question, I would use these.

Do you have any questions for me?
What would you like to ask me?
Feel free to ask me a question.
Ask me anything.
(to encourage people to ask more personal questions)

To find out why someone asked a particular question, I would say these.

That・s a good question. Why did you want to know?
Why would you like to know that?
Why do you want to ask me that?

They are all equally common.

I always enjoy answering your questions Mrs Cheung.

Regards
Graham
