A TV Review on Smallville (season I)

Watching Smallville (Season I) is cool and marvelous! I learn about American teen life and English in a light-hearted way! The drama series, web links and games are cool and awesome! "English in the air" is brought to us by the SCHOLAR and we benefit greatly from it. Clark is a superb modern superman and remarkably human! He is special and different from the classical superman hero in blue flying around in the 90s!

Clark's birth brought traumatic changes to Smallville. He then discovers his secret from his father and the "Weird Wall". This puts him in panic and frustration. Nevertheless, his birth from a meteorite and special powers fascinate the audience. As a teen superman, Clark determines to save people from disasters, fight for justice and truth as his mission. His happy and sad experiences such as the triangle-ambiguous love with Chloe and Lana are sweet and entertaining! They make me weep, smile, yell and chuckle ……

Simultaneously, his internal struggle of keeping his newfound power in secret teaches me to be more mature as a responsible youth. His good relationship with his parents and friends is the most valuable element I learn form Clark.

The most fascinating feature is the twisted story line with fantastic casts! Moreover, the exciting plot keeps me watching! For instance, Clark and Lex Luthor are best friends in the beginning, however, as the story develops, they become enemies. This creates climax in different episodes.

To me, the most impressive episode is the sixteenth "Stray"! It talks about a child's psychic gift being made used of by his cruel parents to commit crime. Clark saves the child with true love and care. What a happy and touching ending illustrating the optimistic side of humanity! Positively, I should contribute myself selflessly to the needy too!

I never found Superman interesting until Smallville was promoted as part of the English in the Air project. It's a TV series about how Clark Kent, who later becomes the Superman, explores his powers and deal with all kinds of conflicts during his teen years. Clark, like other teenagers, has to meet numerous challenges of friendship, competition and love. Smallville gives me a new dimension of the world's mightiest hero who is honorable, courageous, and yet so modest and amiable. That's why Smallville holds me enthralled for months.

Smallville portraits a country-like lifestyle which is so different from what I experience in this metropolitan city. The life there is more relaxed and closer to nature. Teenagers in Smallville High are eager to attend different extracurricular activities. Clark wanted so much to join the football team and he finally got his chance in the third episode. American football is quite different from the soccer we see in Hong Kong. I also found the teenagers there are more mature since Clark and Lex have to put a hand in their fathers' business. I wish I could be like Lana who opens a coffee shop successfully.

What's marvelous is not only the TV programme itself. The website of the English in the Air allows me to revise the useful words and phrases with meanings, examples and audio provided. I can even play the games which is good for consolidation. The puzzles intrigued me greatly as they gave me a chance to put in use what I had just learnt.

English in the Air is a fantastic project which makes English learning fun and easy. Thanks to the visual impact, what I learnt can be more deeply rooted. I hope this valuable project will continue so that my joy can last.

Clark's humanity and strength, Chloe's ambition and unflappability, Lana's passion and Lex's astuteness together have made up the charm of "Smallville."

What affects the growth of teenagers most? By contrasting the life of Clark with Lex's, "Smallville" pinpointed the importance of family in this aspect: Clark mastered his power and learnt from his kindhearted adopted parents that "Power comes with responsibility", while Lex became evil under the influence of his deceitful and manipulative father.

One benefit of watching "Smallville" is that I can learn many colloquial expressions, which are very useful in daily life. As the scenarios show how to use those expressions clearly, I find that it improves my oral English very effectively. For instance, I learn that "It's weird!" means completely differently depending on the context and now I can use "It's awesome!" to express my appreciation instead of using "It's wonderful!" repeatedly.

In addition, "Smallville" is enjoyable, as I can know more about the school life in America. I think that it would be fantastic if I could join the prom and score at an American football match. It will be great if some of these activities are organized in Hong Kong and let the students here have a taste of foreign culture.
