Teen Life in America - Are you overweight?

America has a lot of healthy teenagers. They play a lot of sport. It also has millions of overweight teenagers. They have too much junk food and soft drinks.

When people are seriously overweight, they are obese.

Here are some statistics.

65% of Americans are overweight.

31% of Americans are obese.

15% of young people are overweight.

280,000 Americans die every year because they are overweight.

On average, Americans drink 600 cans of soft drinks every year. Teenagers drink nearly double that amount.

Only 10% of Americans eat green vegetables every day.

But 25% eat French fries every day.

There is good news. About 25% of Americans buy natural or organic food every week.

Obesity is not just a problem in America. In most places, teenagers are eating too much junk food, including Hong Kong. Next time you’re hungry, eat some noodles!

Are you overweight? This website will tell you. It also has information on diets and healthy eating. http://www.bbc.co.uk/health/yourweight/bmi_metric.shtml
