Weekly Focus - The History of Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day has gone for another year. Do you know how it started?

Valentine's Day started in ancient Rome. February 14th was a special day to honour the Goddess Juno. The next day was the beginning of a festival. The girls' names were written down and put in a bag. The boys chose a name. The girl whose name they chose would be their partner for the festival. Sometimes, the pairs stayed together and married when they grew up.

Later, there was a cruel emperor named Claudius. He wanted to stop people celebrating this day. He wanted the men to go off to war and fight, not get married and have families. Valentine wanted the tradition to continue. Claudius had him killed. The church made him a saint and he was known as Saint Valentine. Now everyone celebrates the day named after Valentine.
