This is a pilot project launched by the Standing Committee on Language
Education and Research (SCOLAR)
and sponsored by the Language Fund to encourage greater use of the
medium of television in the teaching and learning of English in
secondary schools. It comprises: (a) the broadcasting of two teenage
English television programmes titled "Road Scholars" and "Lizzie
McGuire" on the TVB Pearl, and (b) the development of teaching and
learning materials and activities based on the two television programmes.
The objectives of the project are:
- To promote the active use of the medium of television as a tool
for English teaching and learning among secondary school teachers
and students;
- To demonstrate to students and teachers what English they could
learn in a light-hearted way through watching English television
programmes; and
- To motivate students of different English language abilities
to use English outside their classroom and exercise their creativity.
The project title "English in the Air" comes partly
from the song "Love is in the Air". If something is in
the air, you feel that it is happening or about to happen, e.g.,
Love/Change/Spring is in the air (The Cambridge International Dictionary
of English). Dropping the verb "is" in the current title
aims also to elicit a literal reading of "English in the Air",
i.e., everywhere. It is indeed our hope to see English "happening"
"everywhere".
SCOLAR
was established in 1996 under the auspice of the Education and Manpower
Bureau. It advises the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government
on language education issues in general and on the use of the Language
Fund, which was set up to support studies and projects aimed at
enhancing the Chinese (including Putonghua) and English proficiency
of the community.
