Stage-2: Road Scholars in Search of Shangri-la
Produce (i) a 30-minute video documentary to relate the literary origin of the ideal of Shangri-la and the practical application of this ideal in and around Shangri-la County in Yunnan, south-western China; and
(ii) a The Making of ... video to document the processes in which you conduct your background research and make use of the materials collected to make your 30-minute video documentary.
Guidelines
1.

Background research on the concept of Shangri-la:

(a)
Trace its English literary origin;
(b)
Read* the 1933 novel The Lost Horizon authored by James Hilton (available in print and on the web);
(c)
See* the 1937 film The Lost Horizon directed by Frank Capra (available in VHS and VCD formats);
(d)
Collect reviews of the novel and the film;
(e)
Write your own review of the film.

*Weekend reading and screening sessions will be organised for participants who wish to take advantage of these opportunities to share their ideas and inspirations.

2.
Identify concepts or ideals similar to Shangri-la created in different cultures, for example, the Chinese Peach Blossom Garden.
3.
Identify the regions in the Chinese mainland which have claimed to be the original Shangri-la, and the reasons underlying such claims.
4.
Visit these regions in July 2003 to search for practical evidence of Shangri-la. (We will make the travel arrangements.)
5.
During your July 2003 trip to search for Shangri-la, you will be invited to present aspects of your background research work to the other participants.
