Stage 1 Winners

There are 9 winning teams in the 8 rounds of the Stage-1 Re-discovering Hong Kong Video Documentary Competition. 27 student winners will participate in the Stage-2 Free Spirits on the Road – Destination South Africa Video Documentary Competition.
Details about the 9 winning teams and their creative video documentaries

Round 1: Animal Signs
The most creative team:
Fong Danica May, Leung Ho Yan Nikki, Chung Wai Ki Vivian
- F.4/6 Good Hope School

Monkey is the animal sign selected. The video shows puppet monkeys in a local school and wild monkeys in a Hong Kong location. The monkey puppets part is somewhat like Sesame Street. The wild monkeys part is more original. It documents the monkeys’ social life from a human point of view, and the narrative seems to indicate disapproval. There is creative use of background music on the video.

Round 2: Fragrant Flavour
The most creative team: None

Round 3: Coastal Riches
The most creative team:
Pang Ka Lee Kelly, Leung Ka Wai Fanny, Chan Hoi Yan Zephina
- F.6 Yan Chai Hospital Lim Por Yen Secondary School

The video documents a range of coastal riches on Tung Ping Chau Island, and smoothly brings up the idea of environmental conservation. It includes good visuals of the natural scenery. The sound of the strong wind in the background also enhances the natural reality effect of the video.

Round 4: All the SAR's a Stage
The most creative team:
Kwan Pik Man, Shiu Ling Ling, Tsang Kwong Hei
- F.5 Caritas Fanling Chan Chun Ha Secondary School

The video documents men & women in a street market area in Hong Kong. It shows what the men & women typically do there. A lot of the video footage is on the physical location rather than the men & women interacting with one another. The visuals and narratives are clear and straightforward.

Round 5: Turtle Hurdle
The most creative team:
Mo Wai Keung, Pang Sze Ki, Siu Chi Ho
- F.5 Caritas Fanling Chan Chun Ha Secondary School

This video documents turtles' life in different environments in Hong Kong. It creatively contrasts life in a cage and life in an open pond. It suggests that, to the caged turtles, their cage is the hurdle in their life. On the other hand, the turtles living in the open pond may be a sort of hurdle to the other animals sharing the same environment.

Round 6: Body Language
The most creative team:
Law Wai Ki Vicky, Lo Ho Yan Galy, Choi Yuk Shan Makoto
- F.6 Carmel Divine Grace Foundation Secondary School

This video shows a creative drama interpretation of the theme. It shows the importance of talk as well as body language in everyday life. It brings up the issue of cultural difference in body language. It also shows the students acting confidently as the characters in the drama.

Round 7: Flying Colours
The most creative team:
Ng Wing Chung, Chow Wai Keung, Chui Ka Ho
- F.4 Caritas Fanling Chan Chun Ha Secondary School

In this video, the concept of flying colours is creatively illustrated with flags flying on poles, kites flying in the sky, the flying dragon of Hong Kong, and airplanes taking off at the Hong Kong airport. The presentation is strong and sharp, but at the same time invites the audience to take part in the interpretation. A very interesting effort.

The 2nd most creative team:
Wong Miu Yee, Mak Ka Yui, Ng Lai Yi
- F.6 Sheung Shui Government Secondary School

This video documents colourful birds kept in Hong Kong, and the voice-over narrative constantly refers to the birds' colours. It shows the students' aspiration to produce a serious documentary based on careful research.

Round 8: Worlds With/out Walls
The most creative team:
Au Tin Wai Apple, Choi Yee Wa Eva, Ko Chi Wing Ben
- F.6 China Holiness College

This video documents aspects of SARS in the HKSAR. It provides an original interpretation of the concept of living in a world with walls between people, with the surgical masks on people's faces symbolizing the walls.

The 2nd most creative team:
To Man Chun Gary, Li Ka Chun Andrew, Wong Sze Chau Steven
- F.4 Shung Tak Catholic English College

This video documents a range of views on the walls that may exist between family members. It shows drama role-plays as well as group and individual interviews. It is a rather serious attempt to produce a documentary on a social issue in a conventional format.
