Stage-2: Free Spirits on the Road - Destination South Africa

The winning teams in the Road Scholars Stage-1 Re-discovering Hong Kong Video Documentary Competition will be invited to take part in this Stage-2 Free Spirits on the Road - Destination South Africa Video Documentary Competition.

The participating teams in this stage-2 competition will go on a study tour in South Africa during 27 July - 3 August 2003. Each team will produce:

  1. a 30-minute video documentary on the study tour;
  2. a 10-minute The Making of … video to document the team's work on the 30-miunte video documentary.

The Winning Team and the Winning Video Documentary NEW!!

Note: This arrangement replaces the originally planned Stage-2 In Search of Shangri-La Video Documentary Competition and the study trip to Yunnan, China, where tourism facilities may not have returned to normal operation following the recent SARS-related disruptions.

Guidelines

Each participating team is free to decide which aspects of their South African study tour to cover in their video documentaries, for example:

  • good & bad experiences when preparing for the tour;
  • pleasant & unpleasant experiences when getting travel documents ready;
  • efficient & inefficient transport facilities used when travelling to/from airports & when travelling to/from tourist spots;
  • exciting & boring encounters during the tour;
  • similarities & differences between the South African way of life and the Hong Kong way of life;
  • wise & regrettable decisions that the members of the team make on the tour;
  • impressions & reflections on human life & animal life in & out of Africa.

The one thing that the participating team must include in its 30-minute video documentary is its own interpretation of the concept of Free Spirits on the Road.

Criteria for evaluating the video documentaries
  1. Conceptual originality
  2. Creative expression
  3. Visual representation
  4. Clarity in the Use of English, i.e. not how accurate your English is but whether you express your ideas clearly in English
