Suggestions
for schools on handling the impact of the tsunami
disaster: |
1 |
When school resumes on 3 January 2005,
the school should examine if there are teachers
or students absent and ascertain as soon as possible
if they were affected by the tsunami disaster (such
as victims, observers, with relatives injured or
died). |
2 |
Activitate the school crisis management team to
work out a plan of action and support whenever there
is a need. |
3 |
If any teacher is dead or suffers
from serious injury, causing emotional distress
to staff and affecting the school's daily operation,
school should inform its respective School Development
Officer to arrange education psychologist for school-based
support by education psychologists. |
4 |
- If any student is dead or suffers
from serious injury, contact School Development
Officer by phone for support services.
- If any students are emotionally
distressed, refer them to Student Guidance Teacher
/ Personnel or School Social Worker for counselling
service.
- If any student shows persistent
physical and psychological symptoms of distress
(such as insomnia, nightmares, pounding heart,
strong fear, grief, crying or significant changes
in behaviour etc.) Student Guidance Teacher/Personnel
or School Social Worker should refer him/her
for professional counselling services (e.g.
psychologist from EMB or your school sponsoring
body, child psychiatrist).
|
5 |
Arrange an assembly or a special class
period to inform student about the facts of the
tsunami disaster, relate some positive messages,
encourage mutual support among classmates and colleagues,
and suggest actions in response to the disaster
such as a moment of silence in memory of the deceased,
sending condolences to the victims. |
6 |
Observe if any students, especially those from
the junior classes, would feel distressed by the
reports of the tsunami disaster by the media. |
7 |
Inform parents about the possible
impact of the disaster on children, remind them
to observe any symptoms of emotional distress and
ways of supporting their children. Education and
Manpower Bureau has uploaded relevant
resources onto the EMB Homepage for schools
and parents' reference. |
