15th Hong Kong Chemistry Olympiad for Secondary Schools
The Hong Kong Chemistry Olympiad for Secondary Schools is a project learning competition jointly organised by the Hong Kong Association for Science and Mathematics Education, the Hong Kong Chemical Society, the Royal Society of Chemistry and Hong Kong Education City, Hong Kong Polytechnic University and The Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education
It aims at promoting the interest of students in learning Chemistry and developing students’ skills in problem solving, critical thinking, communication and science process through project learning. We offer TWO streams of competition this year, (A) Project-based Stream and (B) Non-practical Stream to let students to show their talent by diverse means. Details of the Olympiad are given below:
Theme: Chemistry in Metal (金屬的化學)
Participants: Each team comprises of three to five Secondary 3-7 students
Metals constitute a quarter of the mass of all elements in the Earth. In the periodic table, there are at least 38 elements which are metals. Metals play an indispensible role in many branches of science such as inorganic chemistry, polymer science, organometallic, bioinorganic, materials science and other frontiers of technologies.The chemistry of metals is continuously developed. Much novel and sophisticated chemistry and related technologies, built on the pragmatic of metals, are intimate to our quality of life.
This theme of the Hong Kong Chemistry Olympiad for Secondary Schools in 2009/2010 is “Chemistry of Metal”. The purpose of the theme aims at
- Promoting science for everyone;
- Allowing students to quest this well-perceived field by their own lens;
- Encouraging students to carry out investigative studies; and
- Encouraging students to perform and demonstrate their chemical knowledge in diverse formats.
