With
research interest in media education, Dr Cheung Chi-kim,
Assistant Professor, Faculty of Education of The University
of Hong Kong, demonstrated how popular culture such
as songs and movies can be used to teach English.
For example, he showed that the song by Neil Young,
"Let's Roll", is a good match for discussion
of the September 11 incident when the passengers on
the plane tried to stop the terrorists and said "Let's
roll". He said that teachers can ask students
to write about their feelings towards the songs. Even
if students may have limited vocabulary, teachers
can discuss themes of the songs and movies with students. |
