Book: Vacation under the Volcano
Post Reading Activities

Activity:

Jack and Annie meet some Gladiators on the streets of ancient Rome. Gladiators were slaves or criminals who fought in the amphitheater. They were forced to fight each other or wild animals like lions or bears. The people at that time thought a gladiator fight was great fun. They viewed it as a kind of entertainment.

Question 1:
Do you think it is cruel for both humans and animals to fight each other? Similar kinds of sports, such as boxing and bullfighting in Spain, are still popular today. What do you think of that?

Question 2:
The volcano in Pompeii was so quick that people had to drop everything and run. We could see what their lives were like. If you had to suddenly leave Hong Kong, what would your home and school show people about your life?
