An earthquake is caused by a sudden shifting of plates that make
up the earth's surface. The place where the plates of the earth
meet is called a fault. We should feel very lucky that Hong Kong
is not situated on any fault. Major earthquakes will not happen
here. However, we could still feel a slight shake if earthquakes
happen in Taiwan or Japan.
Could you feel the ground shaking in Hong Kong when earthquake
occurred in Taiwan last December? How did you feel? What would you
do if a serious earthquake happened in Hong Kong?

If an earth quake of the San Francisco proportions struck HK, we would hope that the foundations of the high rise buildings could survive the extreme tremors. But failure of the piling support would mean very high damage expectancy and domino collapsing of constructions on hill-side slopes plus collosal loss of life! And the after shocks would cause devastation beyond measure. The rescue operations would be extensively overwhelmed with very high fire damage and disruption to all of the utilities, such as water electricity etc... Fire department vehicles and ambulances, would be unable get into action due to the heavy road blockages. Ships in the harbour would have to be used as emergency hospitals and shelters. Supermarkets, restaurants and food vending shops would be looted, and after three days people would be killing each other in the streets for food! Millions of people would be fleeing across the border into China or putting to sea and crossing the Pearl river to Macau. Hong Kong would be totally shut down and would not function as a business centre nor internation port of commerce. Road and Bridge damage would add to the chaos. A Tsunami wave following the quake would bring devastation beyond imagination. sir james
