The
Treasure of Monte Cristo
Where are you taking me?' asked Dantes.
'Don't you know?' said the officer. 'Turn round
and look.'
Dantes turned. The boat had passed the entrance
of the port. On the right, he saw the dark shadow
of the island of Ratonneau. And on the left, he
saw the black shape of the island of If.
On the top of steep rocks was a great prison fortress
– the Chateau d'If. The thick stone walls of the
prison had stood for three hundred years. Many
stories were told about this terrible place.
