The Treasure of Monte Cristo
Where are you taking me?' asked Dantes.
'Don't you know?' said the officer. 'Turn round and look.'
Dantes turned. The boat had passed the entrance of the port. On the right, he saw the dark shadow of the island of Ratonneau. And on the left, he saw the black shape of the island of If.
On the top of steep rocks was a great prison fortress – the Chateau d'If. The thick stone walls of the prison had stood for three hundred years. Many stories were told about this terrible place.
