Career We will find a job after graduating. What is your dream career? Doctor, teacher, driver...

This is Sam Chung Moon Suke. She is Korean but lives in Hong Kong. Sam worked at our airport as ground staff. She had to check in the passengers and then help them get on the plane. Here are her thoughts about this job.
I applied for the job after graduating. The job was advertised in a Korean newspaper but it was for working in Hong Kong. I was living here so applied. All jobs with airlines are competitive. Many people apply. You must have good English to do this job. I think that's the main reason that I got it.

Checking in passengers was hard work. They had many questions and requests. Some passengers were quite rude. I always tried to smile and help them patiently. I learnt how to deal with people in this job. Some people were late for the plane because they were shopping. If they had no baggage, they sometimes missed their flight. Looking back though, I got to know people from all over the world and most of them were patient and friendly.

There was more security after 9/11. Some people were nervous to fly. Once, a man tried to take a machete, a big hunting knife, on the plane!!! He bought it in Hong Kong as a souvenir and didn't see what the problem was. We had to keep it.
I usually worked from 9 till 6. Sometimes, I had to work shifts. I remember working from 9a.m. till 1.30p.m. then again from 9p.m. till 1a.m. Expect long hours and shift work if you are in the travel industry.

Hong Kong is a great place to live and work. It's very safe. Many people watch Korean shows here so they know something about my culture. I miss Korean street food though. There are great snacks on the street where I come from. I eat kim chee every day. I make my own.

My husband teaches in an international school. We're having a baby daughter soon so I'm looking forward to being a mother. I might go back to work later.
