The Bookshop
Hannah Sun has been running a second hand English
bookshop on Queen Victoria Street, Central,
for about 16 months. She studied in Britain
and has always been an avid reader.
"I read all types of fiction and non-fiction
books," explains Hannah. "I get to read lots
of books for free with this job so it really
suits me!"
"We have a large mix of local and foreign customers.
A lot of children and their parents also come
here. It's great to see young people enjoy reading.
Non-fiction is quite popular. One customer told
me that Hong Kong people are too busy to read
novels. You can read bits of non-fiction and
still learn something. At the moment, business,
travel and self-help books are out most popular.
The
Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series is Number
One though.
Our books are from about $25 to $55. That's
much cheaper than normal bookshops. We buy books
from the UK and some customers give us books
they don't need."

Science Fiction
"We have quite a large selection of science
fiction books. The most popular writer is Terry
Pratchett. He has written lots of books
and they're all quite short. Maybe that's why
he sells well.
Philip
Pullman's "His Dark Materials" series is
well known teenage fiction. It's about children
who can go to an alternative world by slicing
a hole in air. Anthony
Horowitz has been our most popular writer
for young readers." His Alex Rider series could
be called sci fi because he uses amazing inventions
to save the world.
"Sci fi book readers are usually men but we
do have a few women buying them." says Hannah.
So next time you want to buy
a book, check out a second hand shop. You can
sell your old books there as well.
