Studying Fashion

Many secondary students dream of being a fashion designer. Joyce Ho studied at St. Catharine's School for Girls. Its most famous student is Vivienne Tam, Hong Kong's most successful fashion designer. Joyce is following in Vivienne's footsteps by studying Fashion and Textiles at Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

Joyce offers a lot of advice if you would like a career in fashion.

"I have always wanted to be a fashion designer. I made clothes for my Cinderella and Mini Mouse dolls when I was a child! I made evening gowns for Cinderella, using my old clothes! I've also been drawing clothes since I can remember. It really helps if you are good at sketching.

"If you want to be a fashion designer, build up a portfolio. Keep all your early drawings and designs. Your portfolio can demonstrate your patience and passion for this industry.

" I had an interview to get into Poly U. There were three lecturers and me! They were looking for signs of improvement, not perfect work. If you are already perfect, why should they teach you?" advises Joyce. "If you have a passion for clothing and work hard, you should do well."

"This summer, I think pink will be popular for men. Maybe we should call it salmon colour!"

Joyce would still like to be a fashion designer but would also be happy to work in fashion, as an illustrator or working for a large retailer. She doesn't have a favourite designer but likes to shop in Tsim Sha Tsui or Causeway Bay. Many young designers have shops there.

Student Fashion

Do you have problems thinking of what to wear at the weekend? Students at Kwok Tak Seng Catholic Secondary School recently had a fashion show with an Olympic theme. Here are some of the models.

Edward is looking cool in his dark grey hooded top. He obviously doesn't like to tuck in his shirt. His skull and crossbones tie reminds us of the pirate Captain Jack. The baggy jeans match his top.

Sharis is combining the MTR and Olympic themes to good effect. The sleeveless top helps shows off her sparkling necklace. Striped fingerless gloves like Sharis' are definitely back in fashion.

Mavis has combined Chinese and Western themes in this colourful dress. The Olympics themes and its five circles are splashed all over the dress. Mavis' black leggings make the dress more striking and the fan adds another Chinese touch.

Matthew looks like an undercover policeman in this outfit. His wooly hat is hiding an earpiece and his shirts could be hiding a bulletproof vest! Wearing two shirts suits Matthew and the sleeveless jacket will keep him warm during secret missions.

Chan Mung Ha proves that you don't need to overdress to look good. She is a picture of elegance in this long black evening dress. The silk shawl also suits her, is easy to wear and can be used with many costumes.

Here are 10 fashion facts which may surprise you.
1. Women used to use natural ingredients before make-up was invented. Cleopatra, Egypt's infamous queen, used berries to give her cheeks colour. Would you put strawberries on your cheeks?
2. Most lipstick contains fish scales!
3. Some brave men in Scotland wear kilts, like skirts, at weddings and other special occasions without underwear!
4. Most shirts have buttons at the end of sleeves. It is believed that the idea came from French leader Napoleon Bonaparte. He wanted soldiers to stop wiping their runny noses on their sleeves so buttons were put there.

8. It is normal for men in India to wear pyjamas as daywear.
9. Some women in eighteenth century England wore wigs that were more than one metre tall.
10. Imelda Marcos, former First Lady of the Philippines, had 888 handbags and more than 1,000 pairs of shoes!
