Info Most people start loving cartoons and comics as children and keep loving them all their
lives. Let¡¦s meet two budding local cartoonists. And see if you can find name cartoon
or comic characters from A to Z.

Budding Artists - Here are two young Hong Kong artists who are keen to turn their hobbies into a career.

Jensen Chan

Jensen Chan is studying at Yu Chun Keung Memorial College No. 2 in Pokfulam.

I started drawing when I was five. I would draw on menus when my parents took me for dim sum. I read a lot of funny comic strips like Garfield and Hong Kong kung fu comics. At the moment, Japanese comics are my favourite. The stories are exciting and the art styles are cool.

I like to draw in black and white. Colouring can take the reader away from the story. When I have an idea, I sit in silence at my bedroom desk, take out some blank paper and start drawing. Each drawing takes me about two hours.

I took a summer course on comic art and design at the Open University. This helped me learn a variety of styles.

I usually draw strong men. Maybe I see myself as the hero. After my Form 7 exams, I¡¦d like to write my own story and try to sell it at comic fairs. My friends think my drawings are cool and my parents support me.

Audrey Mok

Audrey Mok is studying comic character design and animation at IVE in Kwun Tong.

My parents said I started sketching when I was three. My early drawings were of cute animals. Drawing humans is much harder.

I have always loved Japanese manga comics. There are so many styles with stories for boys and girls. Hong Kong comics are too violent for me and the stories are quite similar. The Sino Centre in Mong Kok is the best place to buy comics. My flat is full of them! Luckily, my parents support my obsession! They are happy that I¡¦m following my dream.

I have published a few comics. They are fan fiction, based on my favourite Japanese characters. Each issue has 30 pages and takes me about three months to finish. The cover is in colour but inside is black and white, which I prefer. Computers are great for colouring though. My friend and I sell them at comic fairs. We have made a profit!

If you want to be a comic artist, build up a portfolio of your work and keep practicing.
